How Will Summer Reading Be Assessed?
Students in grades 6-12, will be required to engage in "discourse" about the reading they did over the summer. Discourse can be in the form of small group, panel, or digital discussions as long as the discourse is a text-centered interaction that engages other readers. Students may be asked to explain how their reading ties into an important topic, an essential question, a particular genre, etc.
Students will be assessed on the following components (based on the NJ Student Learning Standards for Speaking and Listening):
- Coming prepared to discuss ideas, supported by textual evidence.
- Following rules of collegial discussion
- Posing questions that propel conversations forward
- Responding thoughtfully to various perspectives
- Summarizing points of agreement and disagreement
- Justifying own views
- Making new connections in light of the evidence and reasoning presented
Note:
- Students in the middle school and at the College Prep level at the high school will be expected to discuss one book they read over the summer.
- Students in Honors at the high school level will be expected to discuss at least two books they read over the summer.
- AP level courses have separate assignments - see AP tabs on this website.
