Philosophy

Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports, adapted as necessary to meet the needs of those with special mental and physical limitations.

Special Olympics believes that consistent training is indispensable to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth.

Overview

West Windsor-Plainsboro Special Olympics (WWPSO) partners with Special Olympics – Mercer County for area competitions and Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ) for statewide competitions. WWPSO participates in the following three sports: soccer, bowling, and track. During each season, athletes are challenged to grow both individually and as members of a team. To do so, athletes are expected to attend all practices and area level competitions. Participation on any WWPSO team is a commitment.  Repeated absences hinder the growth of the individual athlete and the team as a whole.

Soccer:

The season runs from late August to late-October with obligatory practices once a week and games played on Saturdays. The season culminates in a tournament at the Lawrence School. Athletes must compete in 4 out of 6 games in order to participate in the tournament.

Bowling:
The season runs from November to early March. Practices run once a week at a bowling alley (to be determined). An area level tournament is held the first weekend in February. Athletes must complete a minimum of 15 bowled games in order to compete in the area level tournament. Placement at the gold/silver level at the area tournament determines eligibility for the sectional level competition which will be held in March. Placement at the gold/silver level at sectionals determines eligibility for the state level competition which will be held in April. As appropriate to the season, updates to scheduled practices and tournaments shall be communicated directly to the teams.

Track:
The season runs from late March to early June. Obligatory practices run once a week. Area level competition occurs in May and is a pre-requisite for  the state level competition held at The College of New Jersey. All members of the team are expected to participate in the Area level competition. The state level competition is an overnight event. Only older athletes who are able to handle the responsibility of an overnight stay are invited to participate at this level.

Eligibility

Students, ages 8-21, that are currently enrolled in the WW-P Regional School District are eligible to participate on the school team. This is inclusive of students not attending their home school.  In order to participate, every athlete must submit a Registration Packet, which is listed under the Forms section on the left side of this page. Please be mindful of due dates for forms as the formation of the team and practices will begin promptly in order for the cohesive unit to work together.
