Health and Safety Update

October 23, 2020

Dear WWPRSD Community,

This week, we have completed our seventh week of our Hybrid 1 and Hybrid 2 schedules. As we witness escalating COVID cases throughout the state, our school district will have families that are impacted as well. The school district is grateful to our community for your continued vigilance in adhering to the health and safety protocols adopted by the school district, which are informed by the CDC and the NJ Department of Health. When implemented with fidelity, the protocols work to limit possible exposure and spread of COVID-19.

Despite our continued adherence to health and safety guidelines, the district was notified of three student cases this week. Prior to this update, we had notified the community regarding a case at HSS and at HSN.  Today, we can confirm an additional positive COVID case of a Dutch Neck Elementary School student who is participating in a fully remote program. As the student is virtual, there is no need for additional action of the school district but it serves as another reminder of our collective need to be mindful of the reality that this virus spreads quickly within families, households, and during times of close contact.  We must remain aware of our surroundings and work to uphold consistent health and safety protocols whether in or outside of school.

Today the NJ Department of Health issued new guidance on the definition of a close contact.  Contact tracing requirements now require that “someone who was within six (6) feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from two (2) days before the illness onset until the time the patient is isolated” (NJDOE 10.23.20)  This is a fundamental change to the prior guidance of ten (10) consecutive minutes within six feet within forty-eight hours of becoming symptomatic. As of the date of this guidance, the school district will adhere to this new standard for close contact tracing.

With holidays and celebrations ahead of us, we want to remind families that should you choose to travel to a state that is listed on the NJ quarantine list or travel internationally, and your child is participating on a hybrid schedule, they must quarantine for 14 days following their return.  Students will be expected to attend classes virtually. It is recommended that parents communicate travel/quarantine plans to your child’s teacher and building principal.

Our continued thanks and appreciation to our families, staff and students for vigilantly completing the daily health screening form and adhering to the rules related to social distancing, mask wearing, and temperature checks. Our collective efforts to follow the established protocols is the best defense to keep one another safe.

Sincerely,

David Aderhold, Ed.D.
