Dear WW-P Staff and Families,

At the March 29, 2022 Board of Education meeting, the Administration publicly presented a proposal to transition aspects of the District’s special education programming for kindergarten through grades 5 to Wicoff Elementary School, and realign our elementary schools located within Plainsboro Township.

After considering the feedback received following that presentation, the Administration is withdrawing the recommendation and will not move forward with the proposal to transition programming. As a result, both the Wicoff and Town Center Elementary Schools will remain PreK-3 schools.

The aim of the realignment proposal was to serve more students within the District by improving our capacity to meet the needs of numerous students who otherwise might have to be sent to out of district private schools - defined by law as a more restrictive environment than a program located in district. The goal was to better align services, improve consistency of instruction, minimize transitions for those students most adversely affected by them, and improve the overall efficiency of the District in our deployment of staff and classroom space to meet the needs of our “Tier 3” autism students, whose population has grown and is likely to continue growing over the next several years.

We appreciate the input we have received from the WW-P community over the last few weeks, as we always strive to address student needs in a manner that WW-P families understand and accept. The District faces immense challenges regarding the needs of our students in the self-contained (Tier 3) autism program and we believed that the proposal was likely to deliver considerable benefits. In view of the concerns expressed by the community, we will withdraw the proposal and explore alternative approaches to address the significant programming, staffing, and facility challenges that lie ahead.

Sincerely,

David Aderhold, Ed.D.
